Anthony Hope Archive! Signed "The Prisoner of Zenda" Along With 10 ALSs, ANSs & Cuts
Archive
An archive of autographed material relating to British novelist Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins (1863-1933), better known by his nom de plume Anthony Hope, including a signed copy of his most celebrated work, "The Prisoner of Zenda," along with an assortment of cut signatures, autograph notes signed, and autograph letters signed, ca. 1894-1920. Various places. Please refer to catalog photos for addition information related to condition, which is overall very good. 11 pieces total.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A hardcover copy of Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, "The Prisoner of Zenda: Being the History of Three Months in the Life of an English Gentleman" (London and Edinburgh: Thomas Nelson and Sons, Ltd., Printers and Publishers, [n.y.]), boldly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper as: "I have great pleasure in presenting this book to an American who has fought for freedom in the British Army = To Sapper Edmund Pemberton James R.E. in response to a request, by which I have felt myself much favored. Anthony Hope Hawkins. London. July 1918." July 1918. London, England. Bound in red cloth with black ornamentation to front cover and black lettering to spine. Affixed to the front pastedown are two bookplates identifying the volume as from the collection of Jean Hersholt (1886-1956), the Danish-American actor. The larger of the two bookplates is signed by Hersholt as "Jean Hersholt." Slight fraying to corners of boards, head and tail of spine. Spine lightly tanned. Small stain on title page, text block lightly age-toned. Else very good. i-ii; 3-280; plus several unpaginated pages of Nelson Library advertisements. 4.25" x 6.375" x .75." 16mo.

Also included:

A selection of signature clips, autograph notes signed, and autograph letters signed by Hope variously as "Anthony Hope," "Anthony H Hawkins," and "Anthony Hope Hawkins," etc. Expected wear to paper including toning, isolated ink smearing, else good. On various letterheads or postcards. 10 pieces total.

- Six autograph letters signed, two of which are postcards, dated: November 10, 1894; November 22, 1894; July 15, 1897; April 1, 1902; n.d. In this group is an additional piece of paper, n.d., the same size as several of the letters, with much-faded text now only faintly visible. Presumably this is another autograph letter signed by Hope, but neither the text nor the signature are now legible.

- One autograph note signed as "Anthony H Hawkins" on postcard verso, dated April 20, 1920.

- Three cut signatures, all signed as "Anthony Hope Hawkins." Signed card dated November 2, 1917.
