Description:

Ansel Adams" Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico" Photolithograph - "The Greatest Photograph Ever Made"

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) Large photolithography, circa 1980 of Adams' evocative image of the moon rising over a small village. Finely screened photolithography, captioned and printed on 16.5" x 19" paper with "AA", printed in the photo, in the lower right corner below the image, handsomely matted. Image: 12" x 15", matted overall:18.5" x 21.5". Some soft waves in the paper, light foxing on verso, one small spot in top center off image (mentioned only for accuracy). A scarce about-fine photolithograph.

"For many, 'Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico' is the greatest photograph ever made. 'Moonrise' was photographed by Adams in the late fall of 1941 when he placed his view camera on a highway overlooking Hernandez. Adams released the shutter as "the sun sank below the clouds behind him... The creation of Moonrise was serendipitous: while a painter or sculptor can work from stored memories and imagination, something must happen in the real world in order for a photographer to make a photograph" (Alinder, 185-191). "The stunning contrast between light and dark, as if we stand in this photograph at the very cusp of day's transition into night, captures the emotional feeling that Adams first visualized when he saw the scene, drove his car into the deep shoulder of the read and hauled his equipment into place to take the photograph. It represents the essence, he felt, of a changing world" (Sayre, World of Art, 265). "Right from the get-go Ansel knew that it was among the very best photographs he had ever made" (Alinder,193). In the early 1980s, the New York Graphic Society issued a limited series of 350 photolithography of "Moonrise": each authorized, signed and numbered by Adams and dry mounted on paper with a custom AA watermark. This beautiful 12" x 15" photolithography of Moonrise, with a printed AA mark in the lower right corner below the image, is from a later series issued by the New York Graphic that reportedly was also to be signed by Adams. Unfortunately, he died in 1984 before he could do so.

Ansel Adams is best known for transcendent views of the natural landscape, like this one.
