Adams Ansel

Ansel Adams Chastises Angry Fan: "You certainly have little charity in your heart and did not give me the benefit of the doubt"

6" x 4.25" black and white postcard depicting Adams's ca. 1948 work "From Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, Washington" signed by photographer Ansel Adams as “Ansel Adams” at bottom of typed text. Bearing a 10 cent cancelled "People's Right to Petition for Redress" stamp and postmarked from Salinas, California on March 26, 1981. In near fine condition, with expected light surface wear.

The 79-year-old Adams wrote to a frustrated Miami fan: "Dear Len Rosenthal: I indeed did write to you. You certainly have little charity in your heart and did not give me the benefit of the doubt. I do not know why my note to you was not delivered. As far as the special edition prints, I do not sign them anymore. That can cause mix-ups since I do not print them myself, my assistant does. Cordially, Ansel Adams [signed] Ansel Adams."

Ansel Adams signed his prints until 1972, initialed them until 1974, and then stopped marking them after that. This was done to avoid confusing collectors. Adams wanted to differentiate his prints printed by himself from later prints printed by assistants under his supervision.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) is celebrated for striking and stark landscape photographs like "From Hurricane Ridge." His interest in photographing natural scenery coincided with his joining the environmentalist Sierra Club in the 1920s. Adams had become a well-established and nationally recognized photographer by the early 1960s. Although Adams did commercial photography to pay the bills, it was always transcendent views of the natural landscape that captured his imagination, and inspired his technical photographic innovations.
