Description:

Andy Warhol RPPC Taken at Studio 54 with Studio 54 Drink Chip & Matchbook. Ex. Sotheby's Andy Warhol Collection.

Vintage real photo postcard (RPPC) 4.25" x 3.5", January 1978, of Andy Warhol, taken at Studio 54 and likely taken with a Kodak Model 3A camera designed for creating RPPC's. Warhol is pictured shooting a photo with his Polaroid Big Shot Camera. Also included in the lot is a Studio 54 Poker Chip and Studio 54 Matches. The Studio 54 poker chip was used as a drink ticket at the iconic nightclub. Accompanied with a Sotheby's "Andy Warhol Collection" tag. All items show moderate use, the RPPC has evidence of prior mounting on verso, toning and wear, but the image is stark!

Andy Warhol, a regular guest of Studio 54, once said the club was "a dictatorship on the door but a democracy on the dance floor". Interestingly enough, Studio 54 enforced a photography ban to protect guests' privacy, yet the photo above still made its way out of the iconic venue known for its celebrity guests, use of drugs and open sexual activity on the club's balcony and in private basement rooms.

The Kodak Model 3A, introduced in 1903, was specifically designed for creating postcard-sized negatives, making it highly popular for producing real photo postcards. This camera used 122 film to produce large negatives, which coincided with the standard measurements of a postcard, allowing for detailed and sharp images. It had various settings for exposure and focus, accommodating different photographic conditions.
