Andrew Wyeth Signed Ltd. Ed. Collotype, "The Sauna," Featuring Teenaged Model Siri Erickson
Signed artwork

A limited edition collotype, "The Sauna," signed by artist Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), as "Andrew Wyeth 190." outside the image at lower right. Limited Edition 190/200. Ca. 1979. N.p. Printed outside the image at lower left: "Copyright © 1979 by the Brandywine Conservancy, Inc." A blind-embossed circular stamp and titles at lower left read: "The Sauna by Andrew Wyeth / Collection of the Brandywine River Museum." The print is hinged along the top to the upper mat. A few gentle wrinkles affect the print at lower left and towards the bottom center, and the signature panel underneath the cutaway mat is slightly sunned. The mat is a little springy and would benefit from framing, else near fine. The actual print measures 27.5" x 24.75" while the overall matted size is 29.75" x 26.75" x .25."

Wyeth's original tempera on panel, "The Sauna," was completed in 1968 and was the artist's first foray into depicting nudes in tempera. The model was the then 14-year-old Siri Erickson, the flaxen-haired daughter of a Finnish farmer from Cushing, Maine. Wyeth, struck by the young woman's appearance and mourning the death of his previous model Anna Christina Olson in 1968, began sketching and painting Siri; he would execute various portraits for about a decade. In addition to appearing in "The Sauna," Siri Erickson also notably appears in "Bikini" (1968), "The Virgin" (1969), "Siri" (1970), "Indian Summer" (1970), "Black Water" (1972), and "Seabed" (1972), among other works. Siri appears in these portraits sitting, standing, or reclining, and in the majority of them she is nude.
