Andrew Wyeth Signed Ltd. Ed. Collotype, "Seabed," Featuring Model Siri Erickson
Signed Artwork

A limited edition collotype, "Seabed," signed by artist Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), as "Andrew Wyeth 190." outside the image revealed by a mat cutaway at lower right. Limited Edition 190/200. Ca. 1980. N.p. Printed outside the image at lower left: "Copyright © 1980 by Brandywine Conservancy, Inc." A blind-embossed circular stamp and titles at lower left read: "Seabed by Andrew Wyeth / Collection of the Brandywine River Museum." The print is hinged along the top to the upper mat and loosely matted. The back mat and underside of the top mat (not visible) have scattered scuffs and pencil inscriptions. The left edge of the top mat is marginally scuffed. Else near fine. The actual print measures 19.25" x 19.375" while the overall matted size is 20.875" square x .25."

Wyeth's original tempera on panel, "Seabed," was completed in 1972. It shows a nude young woman wading in front of a raised seabed built up of castoff shells and other detritus. The model was Siri Erickson, the flaxen-haired daughter of a Finnish farmer from Cushing, Maine. In the late 1960s, struck by Siri's physique and mourning the death of his previous model Anna Christina Olson, Wyeth began sketching and painting Siri; he would execute various portraits of her for about a decade. In addition to appearing in "Seabed," Siri Erickson also notably appears in "Bikini" (1968), "The Sauna," (1968), "The Virgin" (1969), "Siri" (1970), "Indian Summer" (1970), and "Black Water" (1972), among other works. Siri appears in these portraits sitting, standing, or reclining, and in the majority of them she is nude.
