Andrew Johnson Signed Treasury Commission With Georgia Connection - Superb Signature!
PPDS

A 1p treasury commission signed by 17th U.S. President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) as "Andrew Johnson" at lower right. The dark and bold signature is truly superb! March 13, 1866. [Washington, D.C.] Countersigned by Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch (1808-1895) as "Hugh McCulloch" below Johnson's signature. Partly printed and partly manuscript on watermarked paper. With a blind-embossed "Treasury Department" seal at lower left. Docketed with initials at upper left recto, and pencil-docketed verso. Expected wear including flattened paper folds, with scattered minor breaks along the central horizontal fold. Two isolated black ink spots near the lower left edge. Else near fine. Unfolded measures 19.5" x 15.875"; folded measures 3.5" x 8."

The document appointed Thomas P. Robb as "Direct Tax Commissioner for the District of the State of Georgia." Robb was actually one of three Direct Tax Commissioners for the District of the State of Georgia announced in March 1866. The historical record indicates that Robb served as the Postmaster of Savannah the following year, in 1867; as a Georgia delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1868; and as a Grant-appointed U.S. Collector of Customs at Savannah in 1869.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
