Description:

Johnson Andrew

3.25" x 1.875" cream stock card inscribed and signed in pencil by former 17th U.S. President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) as "Andrew Johnson, Feb 16th 1872". In near fine condition, with isolated foxing. Mounting traces verso.

Andrew Johnson served one presidential term, assuming the office in the spring of 1865 after Lincoln's assassination, and governing until 1869. Johnson's post-presidential life was rife with personal difficulties: his son committed suicide in 1869, Johnson survived a bout with cholera in 1873, and lost a fortune in a national bank collapse the same year. Also in 1873, Johnson was defeated in a race for a Tennessee Senate at-large seat.

Johnson was a largely self-educated tailor by trade in eastern and central Tennessee. He distinguished himself early on in his political life by his fine public speaking abilities. After gaining experience in the Tennessee Congress, Johnson served in the U.S. House of Representatives between 1843 and 1853, as the 15th Governor of Tennessee between 1853 and 1857, and later as its military governor between 1862 and 1865. Johnson served as a Tennessee Senator before and after his disastrous presidential term.
