Andrew Jackson signs a patent for an improvement in shoemaking—countersigned by future Chief Justice Roger Taney who authored the Dred Scott opinion

ANDREW JACKSON (1767-1845) Partly-printed Document Signed, "Andrew Jackson," as President, 1 page, 11.25" x 15", Washington, April 6, 1832, countersigned "Edw Livingston," as Secretary of State, and "R[oger]. B. Taney," as Attorney General. Expected folds and with an intact paper seal of the United States affixed over a pink ribbon, lacking schedule page, overall fine.

Jackson signs an ornate engraved patent document for "Frederick Gray A Citizen of the United States hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement in the machine used for Pegging Shoes and boots which improvement he states has not been known ore used before his application made oath that he does verily believe that he is the true inventor or discoverer of the said improvement..."

Frederick Gray, was a resident of Rowley in Essex County, Massachusetts. The invention consisted of "an improved apparatus for holding the last firmly during the operation..." (Journal of the Franklin Institute, 1832, 234).
