Andrew Jackson Signed Patent Vital for Maintaining Readiness of Military Cavalry! Rare Document to Survive Patent Fire of 1836! JSA Authentication
Document

United States Patent, partially printed, signed by President Andrew Jackson, dated June 22, 1832, Washington D.C. The U.S. patent is issued to inventor Henry Koon for a fly net. A fly net in the 19th century was a protective covering designed to keep flies and other biting insects off horses, especially during warm months when insects could cause irritation, distraction, or even injury. In military contexts, fly nets were essential for maintaining the health and readiness of cavalry and transport horses, which were vital to communication, mobility, and supply lines. The document is co-signed by Secretary of State Edward Livingston and Attorney General Roger B. Taney, both of whom played major roles in Jacksonian-era politics. Jackson's signature shows minor ink skipping, and the white paper seal is partially removed, as is typical for documents of this age and format. The piece is beautifully framed alongside a portrait of Jackson to an overall size of 28" x 24", ideal for both preservation and display. Accompanied by a full LOA from JSA.

Just four years after this patent was issued, tragedy struck the U.S. Patent Office. On the night of December 15, 1836, a devastating fire broke out in the Blodget's Hotel building in Washington, D.C., which then housed the Patent Office. The blaze destroyed nearly 10,000 patent documents and over 7,000 patent models, in fact, virtually all records of inventions submitted prior to 1836 were destroyed. These "X-Patents," as they're now known, were largely lost to history, with only a fraction later restored through surviving duplicates or private copies. As a result, original patent documents from the pre-fire era, especially those signed by sitting presidents like Andrew Jackson, are exceedingly rare and historically significant, serving as irreplaceable remnants of America's earliest recorded innovations.

In 1832, Henry Koon's patented fly net represented a smart and timely innovation for a nation still driven by horsepower…literally. Designed to shield horses from the relentless torment of biting flies, Koon's invention improved not just the comfort of the animal, but its performance, endurance, and reliability in the field or on the road. At a time when horses powered agriculture, transportation, and commerce, this seemingly simple mesh covering was a practical breakthrough in early American animal care, so effective and necessary that it earned the official endorsement of President Andrew Jackson himself.
