Andrew Jackson Signed Ornately Engraved Ship's Passport for a Ship which Carried Ralph Waldo Emerson!

Partly-printed Document Signed,  "Andrew Jackson" as President,  one page, 11.5" x 15"  on parchment. Dated Massachusetts, "July 2, 1832,  countersigned "Edw. Livingston"  as Secretary of State. Comprised of a set of wonderful engravings along the top scalloped edge. Vibrant, strong contrasting ink with a very large 6.5" signature by Andrew Jackson. Intact embossed near fine saw toothed paper seal of the United States affixed at bottom left. Docketed on verso. Exceptional bright, near fine condition overall, having been protected lying flat within an oversized book. Expected folds.

A scallop-top ship's passport featuring a detailed engraving of a frigate and a lighthouse with a city harbor scene, issued to ".....the Ship Jasper of Boston" .... mounted with one gun, navigated with 29 men..." We were able to locate the "Ship Jasper" within the records of Boston in which only 6 months later, carried Ralph Waldo Emerson who was on board to travel to Malta and then on to Naples.

An incredible and unique piece of history, relevant for the phenomenal signatories, and its incredible association to poet Ralph Waldo Emerson who found joy in his sailing voyages.

“The voyage of the best ship is a zigzag line of a hundred tacks. See the line from a sufficient distance, and it straightens itself to the average tendency.” Ralph Waldo Emerson.
