Jackson Andrew

Andrew Jackson Signed Ohio Land Deed

Land deed signed by 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) as "Andrew Jackson" at lower right. Recorded at Washington, D.C. on November 1, 1830. The document, which is partly printed and partly handwritten on a single vellum sheet measuring 15.375" x 9.5" overall, was also signed at lower center by Elijah Hayward (1786-1864), Commissioner of the United States General Land Office between 1830-1835. Bearing a beautifully intact embossed United States General Land Office seal at lower left. In very good to near fine condition, with expected light folds. A tiny tear located along one fold that does not affect the text. Some of the clerk's handwriting has faded but Jackson's signature is large and bold, measuring 6" x .75" alone.

Certificate No. 1467 granted 80 acres of land in Ohio to Josiah Johnson of Wayne County.

"Whereas Josiah Johnson of Wayne County has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Cincinnati whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said Josiah Johnson according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April 1820 entitled 'An act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands' for the West half of the South East quarter of Section Twenty two, in township Eighteen of range thirteen East of the Second Principal Meridian line, in the District of land offered for sale at Cincinnati, Ohio, Containing Eighty acres…"

The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management General Land Office Records does not have this November 1, 1830 land deed for Josiah Johnson, but it does list other purchases that give us a fuller picture of Johnson. He was a dedicated buyer, committed to enlarging his holdings. Johnson had applied, either alone or with partners, for land tracts ranging from 80-160 acres each in Harrison and Belmont Counties (near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border) on seven separate occasions between 1816-1829. Clearly our 1830 land purchase was just the latest of Johnson's acquisitions.

Ohio, formerly part of the Northwest Territory, joined the Union in 1803. Along with land redistribution, early Buckeyes focused on building up the state's infrastructure. Its first roadways, canals, and railroads would have been in place by the early 1830s, making settlement look increasingly attractive.
