Description:

Andrew Jackson Letters Patent Signed for Construction of Fireplaces & Chimneys

One partially-printed vellum page, measuring 12" x 15.5", Washington, D.C., dated April 8, 1835. Signed "Andrew Jackson", acknowledging that "Reuben Bacon and Elijah Harris" invented "a new and useful improvement in the Construction of Fireplaces and Chimneys…" Countersigned by John Forsyth as Secretary of State and Benjamin F. Butler as U. S. Attorney General. Accompanied by two pages giving a detailed description of the improvement. Paper Seal of the United States affixed at lower left. Bound with a pink ribbon. The document has flattened folds and creases throughout. Paper loss at the upper edges. Light toning and foxing throughout. Large and bold signatures.

This patent is found in the U. S. patent records and is assigned the number 8,745X. Patent records predating 1836 were unnumbered and could be accessed only by name of the patentee and date of the patent. After 1836, unique numbers assigned by the Patent Office distinguished each new patent. According to the Directory of American Tool and Machinery Patents: Most original patent records were destroyed by the fire of December 15, 1836, and only about 2,000 of the almost 10,000 documents were recovered. Reconstruction of the records was authorized by the Patent Act of 1837 (5 Stat. 191), March 3, 1837, which permitted inventors who had letters patent either to submit the originals, or certified copies of the originals, to the Patent Office; or, in the absence of documentation, to create a new patent document furnished under oath as conforming to original drawings and specifications. Arbitrary numbers suffixed with "X" were assigned by the Patent Office to the restored drawings and specifications.
