Andrew Jackson, Jr. & Wife Hermitage Calling Card

A calling card printed "Mr. & Mrs. Jackson. / Hermitage" at center. Two similar examples of this calling card found in the collection of Andrew Jackson's Hermitage: Home of the People's President attribute this card to Andrew Jackson, Jr. (1808-1865), Andrew and Rachel Jackson's adopted son; and to Jackson, Jr.'s wife Sarah Yorke Jackson (1805-1887), who served as Acting First Lady for her father-in-law from 1834-1837. N.d., n.p. Printed on a white glossy stock card. Expected wear including isolated minor scuffs, surface abrasions, and partial pencil erasures recto and verso, else very good. 3.375" x 2.125." The card is hinged at top verso and mounted to a collector's display page measuring 8.5" x 11." Printed and hand-stamped at upper left recto and lower right verso. Ex-Black Jacks Collateral (Col. Robert George McClellan, Northbrook, Illinois.)

This calling card likely dates to the era of Andrew Jackson's namesake, Andrew Jackson, Jr. 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) and his wife Rachel Donelson Jackson (1767-1828) adopted Rachel's nephew, one of two twin boys, shortly after his birth in 1808; he became known as Andrew Jackson, Jr. The Jacksons lived at The Hermitage, a 1,000-acre cotton plantation, after 1804. The couple lived at the First Hermitage, a modest log cabin, from 1804-1821, before moving into a larger, two-story Federal Style mansion. Rachel died in December 1828 and Andrew Jackson served as president from March 1829-March 1837. Andrew Jackson, Jr. managed The Hermitage during the president's absence. After Jackson's death, during a period of financial setbacks, Jackson, Jr. sold his birthright to the state of Tennessee in 1856.
