Historical Background

George W. Trabue (1793-1873) and Charles C. Trabue (1798-1851) were brothers and partners in business. Charles C. Trabue fought with Jackson in the Seminole Wars and arrived in Tennessee in 1818, where he worked as a clerk in the Nashville branch of the Second Bank of the United States. He moved to Missouri in the early 1820s and served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1824 to 1828. He returned to Tennessee in the 1830s and served as mayor of Nashville, Tennessee, from 1839 to 1841.

“B Armstrong” on this document is likely Robert Armstrong (1792-1854), who was born in Virginia and served under Andrew Jackson during the Creek War and the War of 1812. He was a member of Jackson’s staff at the Battle of New Orleans. Jackson appointed him as postmaster of Nashville, Tennessee, in 1829, and he held that position until 1835. He was a brigadier general in the Second Seminole War in 1836 and 1837 and an unsuccessful candidate for governor of Tennessee in 1837.

The Patriotic Bank of Washington was organized in 1815; in 1865, the National Bank of the Republic, purchased the property of the old Patriotic Bank.

Francis Preston Blair (1791-1876) and John C. Rives (1795-1864) were publishers of the Congressional Globe. Blair was a key member of President Andrew Jackson’s unofficial advisors known as his “Kitchen Cabinet.” Blair’s newspaper The Washington Globe was the voice of the Jackson and Van Buren administrations from 1830 to 1841, and the chief Democratic newspaper until 1845, when Blair ceased to be its editor.
