Description:

Andrew Jackson
Harrisburg, PA, December 5, 1832
Andrew Jackson Electoral College Payment For Election vs. Clay!
Document

1832 Electoral College payment document issued from the Senate Chamber in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, dated December 5, 1832. The printed document authorizes payment from the Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to "Jonathan F. Knight, Esquire," in the amount of $46.50 for his service "as an Elector for President and Vice President of the United States of America." Signed at the bottom in ink by the president and secretary of the college. The reverse displays docketing and period handwritten notations, including "Jonathan F. Knight $46.50," along with additional archival markings. The paper shows slight toning and foxing, expected cancellation, else fine. Measures 5" x 7.75".

The 1832 United States presidential election saw incumbent Andrew Jackson decisively win re-election against National Republican candidate Henry Clay. The contest was notable for the emergence of the Anti-Masonic Party, the first third party in American politics, and for the growing use of national nominating conventions. Central issues included Jackson's opposition to the Second Bank of the United States and his populist appeal to the common voter. The election reinforced Jackson's political strength and marked a continued shift toward broader democratic participation among white male citizens.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
