Andrew Jackson: 3rd Person ALS, Addressed to War of 1812 Buddy?

1p ALS inscribed overall by sitting President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), and signed by him in the third person as "The president" at top. Dated May 6, 1836. The bifold plain cream stationery has blank inner pages and an integral address leaf inscribed "Mayor Trudo - / of Neworleans - ". Remnants of a black wax seal, with minor loss corresponding to the seal, located on the last page. Expected paper folds, else near fine. 5.125" x 8".

President Andrew Jackson wrote:

"The president with his respects to Major Trudo + his Lady, requests the pleasure of their company to dine with him tomorrow at 5 oclock P.M. with a few friends. May 6th 1836 --".

In 1836, Jackson was nearing the conclusion of his two-term presidency. Issues confronting Jackson that year included the debate over specie, the Texas Revolution, the 10-hour-work day for shipyard laborers, Revolutionary War widow pensions, and the United States Exploring Expedition aboard the U.S.S. Porpoise.

Jackson's correspondent was probably a member of the Trudeau family. Descendants of French Canadians, this prestigious New Orleans clan had long been established in Spanish Louisiana. "Major Trudo" could have been René Trudeau (1784-1846), a War of 1812 veteran and the nephew of Charles Trudeau, this last the acting Mayor of New Orleans between May-October 1812. During the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson's bold defense of the city of New Orleans in late December-early January 1815 had been heralded as the "second American Revolution." It's possible that President Jackson now invited a war buddy to dinner.
