Description:

Carnegie Andrew

Andrew Carnegie signature, with excellent provenance

3.25" x 2.25" cream colored calling card signed by Scottish-American industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) as "Andrew Carnegie." The card, in near fine condition, is attached to a larger page inscribed with the following provenance: "Andrew Carnegie - Financier and Philanthropist, Founder of Carnegie Foundation, "  " Hero Fund, " " Many libraries, Written for M.A. Stevens May 1912." The 6" x 4" album page has some minor surface roughness along the left edge.

The last 20 years of the aging industrialist's life--encompassing the period when he autographed this card--were dedicated to large-scale philanthropy. Carnegie argued in his 1889 article "The Gospel of Wealth" that it was the moral duty and social responsibility of the rich to redistribute the wealth. Carnegie donated almost 90% of his fortune to various charities like the ones mentioned here. The Carnegie Hero Fund, established in 1904, awarded (often posthumously) individuals who had risked their lives to save others. The Carnegie Corporation of New York, also known as the Carnegie Foundation, was a trust established in 1911 that distributed Carnegie's money to worthy institutions. Carnegie-funded libraries can be found across the country.

Through savvy investing and the adroit management of his Pittsburgh-based steel manufacturing concern, Carnegie was able to amass a considerable fortune by his mid-30s. He sold the Carnegie Steel Corporation to Wall Street behemoth J.P. Morgan for $480 million in 1901, making him one of the wealthiest men in the world.
