Description:

Anastas Mikoyan & Ivan Kovalev Signed Cold War-Era Memorandum Regarding East Germany

A Cold War-era document in Russian signed by two Soviet officials, Anastas Mikoyan (1895-1978) and Ivan Kovalev (1901-1993). Dated 1952. The document is not transcribed or translated, but it includes a list of three individuals currently stationed in East Germany who were directed to return to the Soviet Union. Mikoyan's signature appears in blue colored pencil at top, while Kovalev's signature in purple ink appears below. Bearing several dockets and inscriptions in pen and pencil. The half-sheet of paper has a single paper hole punch along the left edge. It is unevenly toned near the top edge and shows some light paperclip impressions, else near fine. The piece of paper measures 8.25" x 5.75."

Anastas Mikoyan was a high-level Communist leader of Armenian heritage. His political career, which spanned five decades, was a testament to Mikoyan's savviness; he survived the regimes of no fewer than three different Soviet leaders, one of whom, Joseph Stalin, targeted him in a purge. Mikoyan played an active role in Soviet foreign affairs in China, Cuba, the United States, and eastern Europe.

Ivan Kovalev was a lifetime Communist Party member and career bureaucrat. Kovalev served mainly in a supervisory capacity, overseeing types of infrastructure such as the railroads and communications.
