Description:

Disraeli asks a friend if he could wait three months until he pays him what he owes, because "the inheritance of some property" has made it possible to erase "every judgment which exists against me…"

BENJAMIN DISRAELI (1804-1881) Autograph Letter Signed "B. Disraeli," 4 pages, 7.25" x 9", front and verso on two conjoined sheets. Carlton Club [London], April 10, 1843. To T. Chapman, Esq. Fine condition.

Marked "Private" by Disraeli in the upper left. In part, "Since I last wrote to you, a very considerable change has suddenly taken place in my affairs. By the inheritance of some property & the co-operation of my friend, Lord Exmouth [Edward Pellew, 3rd Viscount Exmouth], I have offered the entire satisfaction of every judgment wh[ich] exists against me, & on the 24th of this month everyone will be erased. I have only one claim against me wh[ich] is not supported by a judgment & I have little doubt from which has transpired, that a fair offer in real money w[oul]d settle it. I am this very day negotiating with that object. You are the last person, notwithstanding your kindness, that I ought to appeal to for further assistance - but if on complete satisfaction of the accuracy of this statement, you sho[ul]d think fit to let the balance of your claim stand over till our July dividends you wo[ul]d confer on me at this moment, a real favor, & a very important service…"
