Description:

George III of England King 1738 - 1820 An elegant King George III signed warrant for the pay of Officers from 1792

Bi-fold manuscript warrant, 8" x 12.75", on laid paper with a large British Crown watermark. Boldly signed by King George III along the top margin as "George R", and along the bottom by George Yonge, Secretary of War as "Geo Yonge". Dated "this 4th day of April 1792". First page is the manuscript warrant, with the verso containing the statement "We have been made acquainted with this Warrant . Whitehall Treasury Chamber the 20th of April 1792" and additionally signed by "Phipps & Bernard", and three others. Docketing statement on verso stating "Warrant for å£3497.10.0 for the pay of the Supernumery Officers of the 41st Regiment of Foot (or Invalids) Lately reduced from 25th Decem 1788, to 24th Decem 1789" . Slight separation along the folds, now expertly repaired. Several tiny edge chips. Typical light toning with slight grubbiness to last leaf commensurate with age. Overall a beautiful example of the period.

King George III was born in London on June 4, 1738. He was the son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and the grandson of George II. He succeeded his grandfather in 1760, his father having died in 1751. George III was the first of the House of Hanover to be born and educated as an Englishman. He had high but impractical ideas of kingship. George III was the longest reigning of the male British monarchs. George III was king of Great Britain and Ireland and presided over the loss of the American colonies. Although never an autocratic monarch, George III was always a powerful force in politics. He was a strong supporter of the war against America, and he viewed the concession of independence in 1783 with such detestation that he considered abdicating his throne.
