Description:

Charles II of England King 1630 - 1685

An elegant King Charles II signed military order, from the Third Anglo-Dutch War.

Manuscript document signed by King Charles II as"Charles II", and dated"the Fifth day of November 1672." Bifold on laid paper, 9" x 13.5". All pages blank except the recto of the first leaf. Embossed official seal upper left with wax remnants on the inside of the document. Seal ghosting to the four outer corners. Pale handling marks, slight ink smudging, greying to verso of second blank leaf, expected folds with tiny pin holes of paper loss along the folds and a few random locations, all now expertly repaired.

An elegant military document ordering John Pigott to complete his regiment "to the number of one hundred soldiers", and then march his soldiers to the "City of Cantorbury where you are to stay and expect our further orders" The order also makes reference to George Villiers, the Duke of Buckingham who came to power in 1667 along with five politicians known as the Cabal, with the ending of the second Dutch War. On the lighter side, the document also requests Pigott to control the behavior of his men and to "be very careful that your soldiers do behave themselves Civilly and duly pay their quarters where they now, and upon their march and, where they shall be quartered as aforesaid."

The early years of Charles' reign saw an appalling plague (1665) and the Great Fire in 1666 which led to the substantial rebuilding of the city of London. Between 1665 and 1667 England was at war with the Dutch (the Second Anglo-Dutch War), ending in a Dutch victory. This military order was the result of a secret treaty that Charles signed in 1670 with Louis XIV of France. He undertook to convert to Catholicism and support the French against the Dutch (culminating in the Third Anglo-Dutch War 1672-1674), in return for which he would receive subsidies from France, thus enabling his some limited room for maneuver with parliament.

A most handsome, early document from 1672 boldly signed by King Charles.
