Amos Kendall, One of Jackson's Most Influential Advisers, LS & Bonus FF

Two pieces relating to Amos Kendall (1789-1869), then in his role as Fourth Auditor of the U.S. Treasury Department, who would become one of Jackson's most reliable Kitchen Cabinet advisers, and serve as 8th U.S. Postmaster General from 1835-1840 during the Jackson and Van Buren administrations. The items include a letter signed by Kendall as "Amos Kendall" and a free frank signed by him as "A. Kendall." The free frank was once mounted to a display page featuring a glossy modern photo reprint of Kendall at top, and a printed description at bottom. 8.5" x 11."

The lot is comprised of:

1. A 1p manuscript letter signed by Amos Kendall as "Amos Kendall" at center. September 20, 1834. Treasury Department, 4th Auditor's Office, [Washington, D.C.] Secretarially inscribed on a leaf of laid watermarked paper. Kendall requests information from his correspondent, Navy Agent at Boston Daniel D. Brodhead (also Broadhead.) Kendall wants to know how much money in traveling expenses was given to Passed Midshipman Joseph C. Walshe (also Walsh), who was supposed to transfer from Philadelphia to the "Potomac" at Boston. Expected flattened creases and isolated stains mostly affecting the right edge. Neatly torn along the bottom to a completed size of 7.75" x 8.875." Else very good.

2. The original transmittal wrapper accompanying the signed letter, free franked as "A. Kendall" in the postage section. Postmarked September 23, [1834], from the "City of Washington" and also hand-stamped "Free." Bearing the remnants of the red wax seal and docketed in the recipient's hand verso. Expected weathering, else very good. 5.5" x 3.375."

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
