Good content and association autograph letter signed adding rank, two pages, 5" x 8", Arlington, July 15, 1861. Writing from "Hd. Qrs. Dept. NE Virginia," Whipple directs his letter to brevet brigadier general Henry Larcom Abbott. Folds, one tiny hole at top left, number in red pencil at top right, otherwise very good.

In part: "…You are detailed for Top[ographical] Engineer with the Right Wing of the Army and will report for duty to Gen. [Erastus B.] Tyler. Mr. Hauxhurt & Mr. Orcutt are ordered to report as guides for that column to be retained only as long as the Genl. may direct. It will be interesting to compare their idea of the country with those who Mr. Perkin & Con who I believe are already employed as guides with that Division. You will take such instruments as you desire…It is hoped that Genl. Tyler may detail a number of men to aid in the execution if that portion of the Engineering operations…".

Offered with an autograph letter signed by Whipple's son, Lt. Col. William Whipple, 4 x 6.5 inches, Washington, D.C., May 4, 1864. Whipple writes on black-bordered mourning letterhead to a Mr. A. Crosman in Providence, RI, sending a cut signature of his father on behalf of his mother. Mounted to a larger sheet above a signature of Amiel Whipple adding rank, penned on a 5 x 1.75 inches. Light show-through on signature, otherwise very good.

Amiel Whipple's correspondent was Henry Larcom Abbott (1831-1927), an engineer and Brigadier General. Abbott served under Irvin McDowell and was wounded in action at First Bull Run. He was brevetted for his actions at Yorktown, and then commanded the Artillery at the siege of Petersburg. In December 1864, he was placed in charge of all siege artillery in the Armies of the Potomac and the James.

Amiel Weeks Whipple (1816 - 1863) was a topographical engineer and friend of Abraham Lincoln. Serving under McClellan, his maps were used on many Virginia battlefields. He was assigned as major general to the Third Army Corps, participated in Fredericksburg, led a division in the defense of Washington, and mortally wounded by a sharpshooter at Chancellorsville. Brevetted after the war by Abraham Lincoln.

His son, William Denison Whipple (1826-1902) was brevet Union brigadier general and Chief of Staff of George H. Thomas at Chattanooga and Atlanta. He also participated at the battles of Missionary Hill, in the Nashville Campaign, and Chattanooga Campaign. He additionally served as aide-de-camp for William T. Sherman.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
