Description:

Jay John

American Patriots John Jay and Gouv. Morris Signed POA Appointment.

Bi-fold manuscript document, 8" x 10.5". Dated "July 3, 1806" and signed by John Jay "John Jay", and Gouverneur Morris "Gouv Morris". Penned to recto of first page, balance of pages blank and docketed to verso. Page with light, even toning, and lovely strong contrasting ink. Expected folds. Two saw tooth seals present alongside both signatures. Near fine condition.

Jay and Gouveneur Morris sign as Trustees and issue a power of attorney appointment for Peter Jay Munro to receive and collect rents from the Estate's real estate “to collect, demand, and receive all rents now due and owing or hereafter to become due and owing unto us as trustees as a foresaid from any person or persons whatever.”

Jay was a founding father, lawyer and jurist, (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Jay signed the Treaty of Paris in addition to his own Jay Treaty, which was negotiated by John Jay and gained many of the primary American goals.

Gouverneur Morris was an American statesman (1752–1816) and signer of the Constitution from Pennsylvania who authored several sections of that document, including the well-known Preamble. He later served as American Minister to France (during much of that country’s Revolution) and U.S. Senator.

A superb document, rare signed by two patriots and founding fathers, in highly collectible condition!
