Description:

Hinton Walter Hinton

3” 5” index card signed by important early aviator Walter Hinton (1888-1981) as “Walter Hinton” near top. The signature is dark and clear, although the card is toned overall with a few rust spots. Also accompanied by a 4pp bifold printed booklet from the University of Pennsylvania announcing their fall and winter public lecture schedule. The first page advertises Hinton’s illustrated lecture, “First Airplane Trip Across the Atlantic and Other Flights”, to take place at Houston Hall on October 21, 1927. With expected folds and a few rust spots, otherwise near fine, measuring 6” x 7”. It is likely that Hinton’s signature clip came from that lecture.

U.S. Navy Lieutenant and NC-4 pilot Walter Hinton was one of the crew members of the first ever transatlantic flight in May 1919. The nineteen-day-long trip from New York to Lisbon was somewhat surpassed by the first nonstop transatlantic flight (completed in just 15 hours!) two weeks later by two British aviators. Yet Hinton went on to explore the Arctic in a hot air balloon, pilot the first “Friendship Flight” between the Americas, and participate in an Amazon River expedition in 1924.
