Description:

Earhart Amelia

Amelia Earhart Signed National Air Race Card

A magnificent piece of aviation history, handsomely displayed!

National Air Race card signed by celebrated female American aviator Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) as "Amelia M. Earhart" above the "Field Referee" line at lower right. The partly printed orange paper card, 6" x 4", is mounted to a floating mount behind glass at the center of a matted frame. Isolated wrinkles and surface abrasions, else near fine. Not examined out of frame. Accompanied by a modern biography of Earhart which gives excellent background information about the National Air Races at Pecos, Texas.

The signatures of Chief Judge, Chief Timer, and Field Referee Amelia Earhart appear hurried, suggesting they were signed on the field. With only the date, place, and signature fields filled in, we can also assume that more of these cards were prepared than were actually used.

In her biography of Earhart, Amelia Earhart: The Turbulent Life of an American Icon (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2010), Kathleen C. Winters describes how the superstar aviatrix was delayed for five days in Pecos, Texas while en route to Los Angeles for the National Air Races. Earhart, who had recently returned from her first transatlantic voyage as a passenger in mid-June 1928, was flying through west Texas when she experienced some engine trouble near Pecos. As related by Winters, Earhart "watched a mad dash of thirty-seven planes clocking in for the transcontinental National Air Races, and in honor of her presence the Town of Pecos named her local referee at the stop." While there, Earhart also toured nearby oil fields and went rattlesnake hunting (p. 86, Chapter Nine: The Vagabond).

While we found little else that documents this specific event, there are some El Paso newspaper articles about Earhart being in the area around September 8, 1928-- the date on our card.

More than just an autograph--an excellent and highly ephemeral piece of Earhart memorabilia, from the apogee of her fame!
