A first edition presentation copy of Amelia Earhart (1897-1937), "20 Hrs. 40 Min. Our Flight in the Friendship: The American Girl, First Across the Atlantic By Air, Tells Her Story" (New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1928), boldly signed by Earhart as "Amelia Earhart" on a label laid down on one of the first loose endpapers. Ca. November 1, 1928. [New York, New York.] The label reads in full: "T.C. O'Donnell / [signed] Amelia Earhart / on the occasion of the / Exchange Club of New York / Luncheon at the Hotel McAlpin / Thursday, November 1st, 1928." Stated first edition on the copyright page. Hardcover, with the original maroon publisher's buckram covers and gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Does not include the scarce dust jacket. Expected wear including minor bumping to corners and headbands. Stray scuffs on the front cover, and minor rubbing to the spine lettering. Fairly sturdy binding. Even toning within the text, which is otherwise clean. Else near fine. 314pp total with 61 black and white illustrations. 5.675" x 8.25" x 1.625." 8vo. Ex-Collection of Steve Forbes.

The recipient of this Earhart signed book was possibly Thomas Clay O'Donnell (1881-1962), the magazine editor and writer.

Amelia Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean by air on June 17-18, 1928, as a passenger aboard the "Friendship," a Fokker airplane piloted by Wilmer Stultz and co-piloted by mechanic Louis Gordon. Earhart did not operate the airplane controls during the 20-hour-long voyage between Newfoundland and South Wales, instead self-deprecatingly comparing her presence aboard to being like a "sack of potatoes." Nevertheless, Earhart was universally feted upon her return to the United States, receiving a ticker tape parade, being invited to the White House, and attending various domestic speaking engagements in the months after the historic flight. Earhart was indeed the guest of honor and speaker at a luncheon hosted by the Exchange Club of New York at Hotel McAlpin on November 1, 1928. In remarks presented before many important figures in the aeronautics industry, Earhart lobbied for more clearly marked airfields and the construction of more airports. Earhart completed her very own transatlantic solo flight four years later, in May 1932.
