Amelia Earhart
[Burbank, CA], August 8, 1936
Amelia Earhart Original Press Photo On Nose of Lockheed Electra, PSA Type I
Photograph

An original press photograph of Amelia Earhart seated on the nose of her Lockheed Electra plane, preparing for a test flight. 1p, measuring 6" x 7.25", [Burbank, California], dated August 8, 1936. Minor loss to lower left corner, with areas of scattered surface creasing and general edge wear throughout. A good example overall. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA to an overall size of 9.75" x 13", receiving a designation of Type I.

Featuring printed caption on verso reading in part: "Miss Amelia Earhart… made the first test flight of the £14,000 'Flying Laboratory'… equipped for a 4,500 mile non-stop flight." With various handstamps and drawn markings also present.

Early in 1936, Earhart started planning to fly around the world; if she succeeded, she would become the first woman to do so. Although others had completed such a journey, Earhart's flight would be the longest at 29,000 miles (47,000 km) because it followed a roughly equatorial route. Purdue University therefore established the Amelia Earhart Fund for Aeronautical Research, donating $50,000 to fund the purchase of a Lockheed Electra 10E airplane. The plane, built in July of 1936, was fitted with extra fuel tanks and other extensive modifications. Indeed, Earhart herself dubbed the twin-engine monoplane her "flying laboratory". The pilot and her crew later set out on the first leg of their round-the-world flight on March 17, 1937, but this attempt was abandoned after a non-fatal crash that damaged the aircraft.
