Description:

A superb signed photo of Howard Hughes as he prepared for his record-breaking 1938 round-the-world flight

HOWARD HUGHES (1905-1976) Signed Photograph, "Howard Hughes," 10" x 8" sepia image of Hughes and his flight crew, being interviewed by Grover Whalen at Floyd Bennett Field in New York just prior to his departure on his historic round-the-world flight on July 10, 1938. Also signed by his radio engineer, "Dick Stoddart," above his image. Offered with seven additional photographs of the flight. Light creasing, penciled identifications above the other subjects' images do not detract from the overall presentation, overall fine condition.

On July 10, 1938, Howard Hughes and his four-man crew took off in a Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra for a record-breaking round-the-world flight from Floyd Bennett Field. With stops in Paris, Moscow, Omsk, Yakutsk, Fairbanks, and Minneapolis, he returned to New York on July 14 to set a new world record, beating Wiley Post's 1933 record by nearly four days—for which the City of New York honored Hughes with a tickertape parade down Broadway. The feat transformed the previously obscure tycoon into an international celebrity.

A superb image, taken by photographer Rudy Arnold (1902-1966), of Hughes being interviewed by Grover Whalen as he prepared for his record-breaking round-the-world flight. Others pictured include flight engineer, Edward Lund (at far left); co-pilot Harry Connor (to the right of Whalen and Hughes); radio engineer, Richard Stoddart (who signs); and navigator Tommy Thurlow. The photograph is accompanied by seven additional photographs including two images of the same scene (one taken from the terminal building, and another from overhead); a photo of Hughes' Lockheed 14 as it taxied for its initial takeoff from Floyd Bennett Field; a close-up of Hughes emerging form his plane after the first leg in Paris the next day; an image of Hughes exiting his plane after his return to New York on July 14; a view of Hughes during the ticker-tape parade held for him on July 15; as well as a shot of Hughes standing with aviation executive Howard Lodwick.
