Davidson writes to Maitland in this letter marked, “Copy”, regarding the trade of goods between Liverpool, England, and Norfolk, Virginia. His letter, in part, “without any of your most esteemed favour we have to advise you that after advertising the Monticello for City Point & finding very few dry goods that could be depended upon (except crates at 30/p ton) we have at length resolved with the concurrence of Cas: Drysdale to dispatch her for Norfolk – yesterday her cargo was wholly discharged…£ 17.10 for the Hogshead from the quay - as the Tobaccos are found to be in a very heated state we were prevented from weighing and sampling them…but from what we have seen of them we are very much pleased with the quality.”

Robert Maitland (1768–1846) was a merchant in Petersburg, Virginia, who later established himself in a very prosperous mercantile business in New York, Robert Maitland & Co. He was a prominent member of the society to which some of the most influential merchants in New York belonged, known as the "House of Lords", or “Under the Rose”. They met at Baker's City Tavern on Wall Street every night to discuss business and partake in their allotted amounts of liquor. It was here that many important negotiations were made.
