Description:

Alphonse Mucha ALS Dating from Around the 1900 Paris Exhibition

A 1p autograph letter in German signed by celebrated Czech artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) as "Mucha" at center. Written at Mucha's art studio at 6, Rue du Val-de-Grâce in Paris's 5th arrondissement on July 6, 1900 on a cream stock card. Light stains corresponding to mounting corners, else near fine. 4.5" x 6." Accompanied by a stamp block of four Czech souvenir stamps commemorating Mucha's Precious Stones Cycle from 1900. Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

The letter is untranslated. It was written to an unidentified "Fräulien" in early July 1900, when the Universelle Exposition in Paris was then in full swing (the world's fair celebrating arts, culture, and technology convened between mid-April and mid-November 1900 in Paris.) Mucha created a series of murals depicting historical scenes from Bosnian history that were displayed in the Bosnia Pavilion on the fair grounds. This marked a departure from the type of artwork that Mucha was associated with, namely, the soft and dream-like Art Nouveau posters of Sarah Bernhardt's theatrical productions which made him famous.

Mucha moved into a top-floor art studio on the Rue du Val-de-Grâce in 1896. The abundant light streaming in from the partly glass ceiling and large windows created ideal working conditions for lithography and photography.
