"At Sea" en route to NY, [July 1, 1928]
All (3) "Friendship" Crew - Earhart, Stultz & Gordon - Signed Menu En Route To NY Aboard "S.S. President Roosevelt" After 1928 Historic Flight
Signed program/menu

A ship's dinner menu from the "S.S. President Roosevelt" signed by ten passengers and ship's officers, including all three crewmembers of the recent record-breaking June 17, 1928 "Friendship" flight: Amelia Earhart, Wilmer Stultz, and Lou Gordon. [July 1, 1928.] "At Sea" aboard the "S.S. President Roosevelt," which was headed from Southampton, England to New York, New York. Other signatories include the ship's commander and other guests who happened to be traveling on the vessel, for a total of ten signatures. The double-sided menu, featuring elegant Art Deco graphics, opens to reveal the guest list on the left panel, and the complimentary dinner menu on the right panel (note the dish dedicated to Amelia Earhart, a rolled beef dish called "Tournedos a la Miss Earhart"!) Expected wear including light, even toning. Isolated corner bumping, closed tears, and stains. Scattered brittleness, damage, or loss to corners. Else very good. 6" x 9."

Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) has signed the menu as "Amelia M. Earhart" near the center gutter, above the signature of Louis "Slim" Gordon (1901-1964), "Friendship" mechanic, as "Lou Gordon." "Friendship" pilot Wilmer Stultz (1900-1929) has signed underneath his printed name at left as "W.L. Stultz." Ship's commander Harry Manning (1897-1974) has also signed, as did other guests who happened to be traveling on the vessel: Dr. J.P. Leake; Mrs. J.P. Leake; Miss Carla Petersen; Captain H.H. Railey; A.K. Mills; and Vas Woodhouse.

Earhart's signature including her middle initial "M" is very unusual. It is also noteworthy that Stultz died in a fatal plane crash a year to the day later, on July 1, 1929 at Roosevelt Field in New York.

Earhart had become the first female passenger to make a transatlantic flight aboard the "Friendship," which took off from Newfoundland and landed in Carmarthenshire, Wales on June 17, 1928, after more than 20 hours in the air. The aviation first was sponsored by Amy Phipps Guest, a wealthy American expatriate living in England, who obtained the Fokker seaplane and financed the trip. Although initially Earhart's contract listed her as the airplane's commander, and explicitly stipulated that she had to get some flying time, the actual travel conditions (and Earhart's lack of experience flying by instruments-only) necessitated that the entire flight be piloted by Stultz. Earhart later described herself as "just a sack of potatoes" on board, but she actually maintained the flight's log and confirmed their navigational position. After celebrations in Southampton, the "Friendship" crew boarded the ocean liner "S.S. President Roosevelt" to return home. They arrived in New York five days later, on July 6, 1928.
