Tennyson served as Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1865 until his death in 1892. One of Queen Victoria's favorite poets, Tennyson was granted a baronetcy in 1884, thereafter becoming known as Alfred, Lord Tennyson. His rhyming poetry and blank verse were widely celebrated during his lifetime and inspired the Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic Movements.

Tennyson lived at Farringford House, an early nineteenth-century stone manor house, between 1853 and 1892. Its gardens were arranged by Tennyson. After serving for many years as a hotel, Farringford became a historical house museum in 2017.
