Hitchcock Alfred 1899 - 1990 Alfred Hitchcock condoles Leonard Lyons's widow

6.25" x 9" single page onionskin TLS on Alfred Hitchcock letterhead signed "Hitch" in black fiber tip pen at center right. Letter dated October 8, 1976 and written from Hitchcock's Bel Air, California home to "Mrs. Leonard Lyons" on the event of her husband's death the day before at the age of seventy. In very fine condition, with expected fold marks, otherwise spotless.

The celebrated director of psychological thrillers and mystery films writes a short and sincere condolence note to Sylvia Lyons, recent widow of Leonard Lyons: "My dearest Sylvia, Alma and I want to send you our simple, but of necessity, wordless thoughts. With all our love, Hitch".

Leonard Lyons (1906-1976) was a popular serial columnist who produced 12,000 mostly arts-related newspaper columns over a forty-year period published in the New York Post under the heading "The Lyon's Den". Leonard and Sylvia Lyons were a dynamic couple who knew dozens of actors, musicians, writers, and Hollywood personalities through Leonard's work as a journalist.

Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) had a prolific 50-year-long directorial career that included over sixty films. One of his last works, Family Plot, a black comedic tale of imposture and conspiracy, was released the year this condolence note was written. In the note, Hitchcock also extends the sympathy of his spouse, British screenwriter Alma Reville (1899-1982).
