Dreyfus Alfred

Alfred Dreyfus Superb Signed Photo

Postcard image of Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), the wrongly convicted French military officer involved in one of the most sensational political scandals of fin-de-siècle France, signed by him as "ADreyfus" on the mount below. Printed "Collection C. Coquelin" recto in margin, and with blank French address label template verso. The black and white bust-length portrait of Dreyfus shows him wearing formal military attire. In near pristine condition.  The image measures 3.125" x 4.625" while the postcard measures 3.5" x 5.375" overall.

Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason and imprisoned in 1895. A later investigation, forced largely by French journalist and novelist Emile Zola in 1898, proved that the evidence on which Dreyfus had been convicted was forged. This resulted in a second trial in 1899, which came up with another conviction. In an attempt to forestall further controversy, French President Emile Loubet granted Dreyfus an official pardon. Yet as this did not clear his name, Dreyfus's supporters pressed for a civilian court of appeals to hear the case in 1906, which ultimately vindicated him. He was later awarded France's Legion of Honor.

A century later, the scandal known as the Dreyfus Affair is still the subject of fresh investigations, most recently a new book by Oxford historian Ruth Harris, Politics, Emotion, and the Scandal of the Century. A New York Times review states: "The story is a rich one, exposing the determination of military and political leaders to cover up their errors at all costs and, still more profoundly, the bigotry that foreshadowed the genocidal horrors of the 20th century."
