Description:

Alexandria Merchant Records Rental of Slave and Peter Force

In this ledger for the year 1825, perhaps kept by Alexandria merchant Edward Dyer, the owner recorded his income and expenses for the year. Beginning the year with $93.34¾ "cash on hand," Dyer ended the year with $642.14¾ "balance on hand." The ledger devotes the left pages to money "Received" and the right pages to money "Expended."

Most of the income seems to have come from loans he made to various individuals and from the receipt book from his store. Among those to whom he loaned money was Peter Force (1790-1868), the famed printer, newspaper editor, and early American historian who published a compilation of archival materials on American history between 1837 and 1853.

[SLAVERY.] Handwritten Ledger, 1825, Alexandria, Virginia. 80 pp. (74 with text), 3.75" x 6.25". Some edge folds and toning; very good.
