Alexander H Stephens of Ga in the admission of Oregon into the Union to be printed at the Globe Office at 50 cts per 100", of which Stephens bought 2000 total. The original speech was given at the House of Representatives on February 12, 1859. With flattened folds and light soiling. Clipped top right corner. Boldly signed.

Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-1883) was an American politician who served as the Vice President of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865 and later as the 50th Governor of Georgia from 1882 until his death. Stephens was a strong supporter of slavery and controversially tabled the Clayton Compromise, which would have banned slavery from the Oregon Territory. This action nearly resulted in his own death, as it sparked a disagreement with Georgia Supreme Court Justice Francis H. Cone, who denounced Stephens as a traitor to the South. The conflict lasted several months and ultimately came to a head when the men started a verbal argument outside the Thompson Hotel in Atlanta. Stephens struck Cone in the face with his walking cane, and in turn, the enraged Cone drew a knife and stabbed Stephens six times. The already physically frail Stephens had to spend months in bed to recuperate and never fully recovered the use of his right hand.
