Revolutionary War. Alexander Scammell (1747-1781). Manuscript Document, "Return of the present Strength of the Massachusetts Regiments together with the number of Recruits joined to each," 1p, 8" x 13.5", no place, no date. Signed at the conclusion, "Alexdr Scammell," as adjutant general, confirming the distribution of 277 drafts amongst the several regiments. Docketing at verso with a list of names of 7 colonels and the number of new drafts assigned to each. Document exhibits expected folds and creases, minor toning and scattered foxing. A small pinhole to upper portion. In near fine condition and boldly signed by Scammell.

Listed in the document are the commanders of eleven Massachusetts regiments, identifying each colonel by surname: Brewer; Marshall; Bradford; Tupper; Greaton; Putnam; Nixon; Bailey; Jackson; Wesson; and Alden. Three adjacent columns show numbers for "Present Strength," "Recruits Joind," and "Total." Scammell signs below the statement reading: "The above is a distribution of the last 277 Drafts to the several Massachusetts Regiments."

Scammell was an American military officer and attorney who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. A member of George Washington's inner circle, he was the highest-ranking American officer killed during the Siege of Yorktown. With the start of the American Revolution, Scammell was appointed as a Major in the New Hampshire Militia in April 1775. On September 21, 1775, he was appointed as the Brigade Major for the New Hampshire Brigade. He became the Aide de Camp to Major General Sullivan on August 14, 1776, but in September was ordered to assist Colonel George Reid in New York City and fought at the Battle of Long Island. He then became the Brigade Major to Major General Charles Lee's Division on October 29, 1776.

On November 8, 1776, Major Scammell was promoted to Colonel, and was given command of the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment, Continental Line. However, as that regiment had not yet been recruited (the company officers spent the early months of 1777 recruiting), Colonel Scammell accompanied the 1st and 2nd New Hampshire Regiments south to join General Washington with the Main Army. In this capacity Colonel Scammell crossed the Delaware with Washington and took part in the Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton. In the latter, Colonel Scammell is recalled to have preceded Washington in rallying the troops who were being beaten badly. Both officers came through unscathed with earned reputations as extraordinary battlefield leaders.
