Description:

Alexander Nowell and Dr. John H. Newman Two Autograph Letters Signed

A fantastic example of the progression and evolution of Catholicism and the Church of England over a period of nearly 300 years. Included are two letters, one from around the mid to late 1500s and the other from 1875, relating to Alexander Nowell, Dean of St. Paul's and John H. Newman, a cardinal deacon in the Roman Catholic Church. As follows:

Alexander Nowell Autograph Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 8.25" x 3.5", no place, n.d. Signed "Alexander Nowell/Deane of Paul's in London." A short note declaring his appointment of Alexander Browne, a servant, to receive money sent by him to another recipient. Nowell (Ca. 1507-1602) was an Anglican priest, dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, and author of the catechism still used today by the Church of England.

John H. Newman Autograph Letter Signed. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 8", Birmingham, dated August 27, 1875. Addressed to Messrs Williams & Norgate. Newman writes to the men about a number of volumes, including a duplicate he was sent and would like to return, and a volume he requests them to find for him. John Henry Newman (1801-1890) led the Oxford movement, or the renewal of Roman Catholic thought and practice, within the Church of England.

Both have been mounted at the left edge to an archival folder, measuring 10.75" x 15" overall; could easily be removed if desired. Mounted along with an engraving of Dean Nowell's Monument at St. Paul's Cathedral and the cathedral itself. Nowell's letter is lightly tones, with creasing and some areas of wrinkling. Light soiling and boldly signed. Newman's letter has flattened mail folds and light soiling. Also boldly signed.
