Alexander III Personally Owned Finely Bound News Journals From the Russian Imperial Library (the Gatchina Palace)

L'Illustration Journal Universel. Paris. A bound set of lavishly illustrated individual weekly news journals for dates of July-December of 1871, and January-December of 1872. 14.75" tall by 11.5" wide. Written in the World language of the period, French. Condition report and provenance below.

This outstanding book of Journal Issues, personally owned by Alexander III, represents the weekly world news from politics to the arts and sciences (with emphasis around Europe and Russia). The book includes Alexander's personal bookplate to the front end paper, and also bears the striking RUSSIAN IMPERIAL LIBRARY STAMP for the Gatchina Palace in Cyrillic text located on the front end paper. The Gatchina Palace was a favorite residence of the Imperial family after it had been enlarged substantially by Alexander III's grandfather Nicholas I. Many of the individual weekly Title pages also bear Alexander's Red Stamp. Perhaps the stamps were placed to discern which news weeks he had just completed reading. An image of these stamps, his bookplate and the Russian Imperial Library Stamp appear in our photos for the listing.

Provenance: Alexandre III of Russia (1845-1894), Russian Imperial Library at Gatchina Palace. Ex. Christies with the original Christies tag included.

Condition: Worn and rubbed boards in decorative purple and black paper with with leather corner tips. The spine is no longer present.  The Front and rear boards are partially detached, with a shaken binding. Original end papers present with the bookplate of Alexander III present and in excellent condition. The book is mostly internally clean throughout with some occasional light stains. Alexander III's stamps remain in wonderful condition.
