Translation:

"In God's grace, I am, Alexander the First, Emperor and the Russian Czar. So will everyone know that on 27th of July, 1803 I granted and established the rank of Major to Rebinder, Alexander, who formerly served me as Captain.  I command that Major Alexander Rebinder is recognized and honored. I hope that in the future the Major will serve me with faith and truth, as an Officer must do. This decree signed and sealed by me. St. Petersburg, 29th of September, 1804.

Alexander".

Tsar Alexander I would rely on officers like Rebinder to defend his empire during several hotly contested international conflicts. Russia joined coalition forces Austria, Portugal, Sweden, and the United Kingdom in the War of the Third Coalition (1803-1806), part of the Napoleonic Wars. In the so-called "Battle of the Three Emperors" (the December 2, 1805 Battle of Austerlitz), Tsar Alexander I and Holy Roman Emperor Francis II were unable to forestall Napoleon's land-grabbing march across Western Europe, and were soundly defeated. Later however, in 1812, Alexander I ejected Napoleon from Russia.

In the first decade of the nineteenth century, Russia also fought in three additional theaters, sometimes against erstwhile allies. Russians combatted Persian forces during the Russo-Persian War (1804-1813), in a territorial dispute over modern day Georgia; the British during the Anglo-Russian War (1807-1812) regarding sea rights in the Baltic and elsewhere; and the Swedes during the Finnish War (1808-1809), also over land control. Was Major Alexander Rebinder involved in any of these conflicts? Quite possibly!
