Alexander Hamilton Superb Letter, Army Recruiting at Tioga Point

Hamilton, Alexander. Autograph Letter Signed to George W. Kirkland. New York. Jan. 31, 1799. [1]p. Minor soiling, near fine. Archivally framed with an engraved portrait of Hamilton, prime for display.

ALS written by Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) to George W. Kirkland of Philadelphia, acknowledging his letter of January 29th and agreeing to support Kirkland’s scheme to make Tioga Point in Pennsylvania a recruiting hub for the Army. The letter reads: “Sir, I have received your letter expressing a wish to be established, while in the recruiting service, at Tioga Point. When the subject shall come before me for execution you may depend upon your suggestions being duly attended to, believe me sir. With great esteem, your servant, Alexander Hamilton.”

At this time, Hamilton was second in command of the Army under George Washington, who had reluctantly agreed to resume his role as Commander in Chief during the Quasi War with France. Hamilton and Kirkland corresponded several times that year on standard military matters, such as supplies and recruiting. Tioga Point is located on the Pennsylvania-New York border, half way between Ithaca and Scranton. At the time, this would very much have been frontier territory.

A copy of Kirkland's letter is included. Ex. Ken Rendell Gallery with his description.
