Description:

Alexander Hamilton Orders Pistols! Exceptional Irony As He was Killed in a Duel by One.

1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.5" x 9.75", Treasury Department [Philadelphia], dated December 12, 1792. Signed "A. Hamilton" and addressed to Sharp Delany Esq., Collector of Customs in Philadelphia. Hamilton instructs Delany on the delivery of an order "intended for the equipment of the Revenue Cutter of Virginia." The order includes "10 Muskets with Bayonets, 20 Pistols, 1 Broadaxe, 1 Chisel largest, 1 ditto smaller, 2 lanterns", and Hamilton requests that the items be forwarded "by the first water conveyance to the Collector of Norfolk." The letter has expected mail folds and toning. The pages of the bifolium adhere together at the corners. Small tears and separations have been repaired with archival tape. Additional tape residue on verso. There is a larger area of paper loss on the address page from where the wax seal was broken. Boldly signed.

Alexander Hamilton was made first Secretary of the Treasury on September 11, 1789, and the government was run from Philadelphia until the new capital city was built. The government and the Department of the Treasury eventually moved to Washington, D.C. in 1800. During his tenure, Hamilton insisted upon the federal assumption of the country's war debt and sought to revitalize public credit. Hamilton is responsible for much of the development of industry and trade in the United States, and his sound financial policies inspired the Bank of the United States.
