"April 2 1989

Dear David R. Larson -

Brotherly Love from me and the whole Roots family of Kunta Kinte!

Alex Haley".

Alex Haley had written other major works prior to the 1976 publication of Roots: The Saga of an American Family, but none had captured such mainstream interest. In the novel, Haley recounts the experiences of Kunta Kinte, a young Gambian man sold into slavery and brought to Colonial Maryland. Roots was based partly on fact and partly on Haley's imagination, but the author did maintain that he was a direct descendant of the real Kunte Kinte. Roots was awarded a special issue Pulitzer Prize in 1976 and its adaptation into an ABC miniseries the following year attracted approximately 130 million viewers.
