Aldrin's Boot Print! Rare Apollo 11 Hand-Numbered Colored 70mm Film Positive (AS11-40-5878), Ex-Richard Underwood. With The Right Stuff Space COA!
Relic

Examples like these hand-numbered Apollo 11 Hasselblad film frames were used to create the production film for NASA mission photographs. This early-generation, hand-numbered frame was copied from the film that went to the Moon. It is first generation off the primary flown film used by astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. It was used in preparation of later-generation, machine-numbered film strips and photograph production including the sought-after red-numbered prints. Interested bidders are encouraged to view the film positive in person.

The 70mm film positive, AS11-40-5878, which has a violet cast to the naked eye, shows a dramatic astronaut boot print deeply impressed in the sandy lunar surface. The left border of the film is hand-annotated indicating Apollo 11, magazine 40 (also known as magazine "S"), and the frame number. Magazine "S" was the only magazine used by Armstrong and Aldrin while on the lunar surface. The film itself measures 2.75" x 2.375" but is presented in an archival sleeve and placed in a floating frame measuring approximately 4.25" x 4.25" x 1." Because the film was rolled tight for many years, it will curl if removed from the frame. A signed Certificate from Sandy Clarkson of The Right Stuff Space accompanies the lot, and states that this film is from the Richard Underwood estate.

An almost identical Apollo 11 70mm film positive - in fact, that corresponding to just one frame before, or AS11-40-5877 - was sold at RR Auctions about 18 months ago for nearly $5,000 including the buyer's premium.

This 70mm positive is from the Richard Underwood Estate. Underwood was the "Supervisory Aerospace Technologist" who developed the Apollo film as soon as it was returned to Earth. In fact, he was the first person to view every photograph from Gemini through the early Shuttle missions. This image was in Underwood's personal collection when he passed away in 2011.
