Description:

Albert Gallatin War of 1812-Dated LS to OH Governor Meigs Re: "the payments to the troops"

A 1p letter signed by U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin (1761-1849), as " -- Albert Gallatin" at lower right. Written at the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. on December 14, 1812. Inscribed overall in a beautiful secretarial hand. Expected folds and some professionally repaired splits only visible verso. Trimmed at top and reinforced with a paper strip verso. Else near fine. 7.675" x 9.25."

Treasury Secretary Gallatin dictated the following message to "His Excellency Governor Meigs," 4th Governor of Ohio Return J. Meigs, Jr. (1764-1825), who led the state between 1810-1814. The amount of money discussed in the letter was substantial--adjusted for inflation amounting to well over $100,000 in 2021--and appeared to be earmarked for road construction undertaken by troops. Chillicothe in southern central Ohio served as the capital of Ohio between 1803-1810 and 1812-1816.

Gallatin stated in part:

"I…have directed the Treasurer to remit to you accordingly 5.500. - Dollars in a draft on the Bank of Chillicothe.

I fear that this business will give you more trouble than was wished; as the payments to the troops must necessarily be more subdivided than if made to a contractor. And it will also be necessary on the plan which you have adopted, that your account of the expenditure should state the several objects to which the money has been applied, whether labour or supplies, and be accompanied with the receipts of the persons actually employed on the road, or who may have furnished the supplies…"

Abraham Alphonse Albert Gallatin emigrated to the United States from Switzerland in the 1780s. Gallatin became involved in Democratic-Republican politics in the late 1790s. His adept understanding of finance propelled him into Jefferson’s cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury between 1801 and 1814.
