Description:

Gallatin Albert

Albert Gallatin unusual & superb content ALS

Bi-fold ALS, 6.25" x 8". Dated "N.Y. June 1, 1836" and signed by Gallatin as "Albert Gallatin". Expected folds, small 1/2 inch of paper loss to corner, with slight separation along fold, not affecting text. Two small areas with tape ghosting. Original wax seal present.

A lovely ALS from Albert Gallatin,  a Swiss-American politician and diplomat who was an important leader of the Democratic-Republican Party, until ultimately becoming the longest-tenured United States Secretary of the Treasury and serving as a high-ranking diplomat. This letter to Professor McVickar represents his reflections and opinions of a circular which he received regarding the number of uneducated children in the US. His concern was one of inappropriate research in addition to missing the bigger picture. Shown in part below:

"Dear Sir

Permit me to suggest a correction in the circular as herein explained.

I will feel honored to have my name inserted as one of the Committee and only wish I was more worthy of that distinction

Respectfully

Your obedt Servant

Albert Gallatin"

Gallatin continues his more detailed explanation and edits for consideration on the Verso of:

VERSO:

"The estimate of the number of uneducated children in the United States, as given in the circular is exaggerated (1400000 under the age of fifteen in 1833) …

… We should not make our situation worse than it is. And it may also be observed, that, as the immediate object of the new society is not to increase the number of schools & of children attending schools, but to provide better books … "

A lovely ALS, showing early concerns over the quality of our US educational system and its access children in the US. This debate still rages today, 80 years later.
