Alan Shepard Signed Kennedy Print with Zarelli L.O.A.

Large color print of Shepard receiving a medal from President Kennedy, signed in black felt tip pen by Shepard as "Alan Shepard", with a full signed inscription by John Kennedy done in facsimile. Matted in a light grey/blue mat with a gilt fillet lining. Photo print size 14" x 11", completed mat size 20" x 21.5".  Accompanied by a Letter Of Authenticity by Steve Zarelli of  Zarelli Space Authentication. Superb presentation! From the collection of Elton Stepherson, one of the earliest African-American employees of NASA.

The print depicts President John F. Kennedy and Alan Shepard during the presentation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Distinguished Service Medal, which astronaut Alan Shepard was awarded at the White House Rose Garden. In his remarks, President Kennedy congratulated Commander Shepard on his successful completion of the Mercury-Redstone 3 test flight (also known as the Freedom 7), during which Shepard became the first American to make a suborbital flight in space. The President also discussed the national and international significance of the flight. Ten years later, in 1971, during his Apollo 14 mission, Shepard would walk on the Moon's surface and become one of only 12 astronauts to have ever accomplished this feat. He was the oldest person to walk on the Moon, at age 47 years and 80 days.

Kennedy's facsimile inscription reads:

 "For Commander Alan Shepard Jr-

Who has rendered distinguished service to his country-

With appreciation and warm regards-

John F. Kennedy - May 8th, 1961".
