Description:

After Rembrandt Etching of Jan Uytenbogaert, Ex-Erskine Hewitt, Park Bernet

An etching after Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) depicting Dutch religious reformer Jan Uytenbogaert. The wooden and paper backing verso bears several original registrar labels, including one from 1906, and is copiously annotated with notes relating to the piece and its acquisition at auction. Provenance: Ex-Erskine Hewitt, purchased via auction at the Parke-Bernet Galleries in 1938. From a recently discovered collection that has not seen the light of day for over 70 years!

The etching is trimmed to a nearly complete oval, laid down on a cardboard backing, and enclosed within the original Erskine Hewitt-era gilt frame. The back is inscribed in part: "Erskine Hewitt / Collection / Sale / Parke Bernet / #508" and bears two labels, one reading: "Property of / Mr. Erskine Hewitt / Bought at Auction / A.J.M." and the other reading: "Property of / Director Hewitt, / Loaned to Bank / Feb. 2nd, 1906." With numerous other collector's labels and notes. Expected surface wear including isolated scuffs or traces of old adhesive. The original frame has been professionally repaired. The sight size of the etching is 6.875" x 7.875" while the overall framed size is 8.25" x 8.375." A striking presentation!

Rembrandt van Rijn completed his portrait of Jan Uytenbogaert (aka Johannes Wtenbogaert, 1577-1644) in 1635, in what was his first commissioned etching depicting individuals besides family members. Uytenbogaert was the religious and ideological successor of Jacobus Arminius, who became the leader of a sect called the Remonstrants. Uytenbogaert was banished from the Dutch Republic from 1618-1626 because of his beliefs. Rembrandt's original etching was octagonal; its edges, extending past the image, featured Rembrandt's signature in stone, the date, and a caption informing Dutch followers that Uytenbogaert had returned from exile.

Erskine Hewitt (1871-1938) was the grandson of Peter Cooper and the youngest son of businessman and former New York City mayor Abram Hewitt. Educated at Princeton and New York University, Erskine became an entrepreneur and real estate developer. He had a passion for collecting art and artifacts, especially portrait miniatures and items relating to the Revolutionary War. Erskine donated a portion of his collection to the Museum at Cooper Union, today the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian National Design Museum. Featured items from Erskine Hewitt's estate were auctioned for the benefit of the Cooper Union fund.

The Erskine Hewitt Collection was offered at auction at Parke-Bernet Galleries over five sessions from October 18-22, 1938. The 1,190 lots of artwork, antiques, decorative arts, silver, rugs, and tapestries generated nearly $100,000. Lot 508 crossed the auction block on October 19, 1938, and is described as: "Prints and Drawings. Engraved portraits of Andrew Jackson and Alexander Hamilton…Etching of Rembrandt's Jan Mytenbogaert and others. Together 5 pieces, various sizes…" Please see additional catalog photos for more information, for reference only.
